In January 2015, Pejman Foundation and Sam Art, a Dastan Outside the Basement Project presented "Ardeshir Hyphen Seventeen Eighty-Seven," an archival exhibition of works on paper and print by the late Iranian cartoonist and illustrator Ardeshir Mohasses. The exhibition was put on display at Sam Art, a pop-up gallery initiated as an extension to Dastan’s Basement, Tehran.
Pejman Foundation supported the publication of "Ardeshir Hyphen Seventeen Eighty-Seven" and organized a launch session coinciding with the exhibition. Looking into Ardeshir’s under-recognized oeuvre and devoted to highlighting his indisputable influence on visual production in contemporary Iran, the publication honors an exceptional vision investigating the most disquieting elements in Iran’s identity throughout its long history and beyond the dominance of periodic ideologies.
The book follows a chronological narrative of Ardeshir’s life compiled and composed by Dariush Kiaras.
Ardeshir Mohasses (1938, Rasht-Iran - 2008, New York) was an eminent cartoonist, illustrator and painter who played a major role in the development of satirical cartoon and visual critique in Iran. He graduated from the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Tehran University in 1962. Before leaving Tehran in 1976 for New York — where he stayed for the rest of his life — his work had appeared in many books, magazines, newspapers and gallery shows. The first retrospective of his works in the United States was held at Asia Society Museum, New York (2008).
