About Raha Raissnia:

Raha Raissnia was born in Tehran, Iran in 1968. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She creates works which combine painting, drawing, film, music and performance. Much of her work is focused on exploring the intersection of these different mediums and how each informs the other in terms of their materiality and their respective processes of making. Her process is layered and permutational and makes use of both digital and analog technologies and relies heavily on what her hands can achieve. Raissnia holds a firm belief that the medium of film has its own inherent distinctive qualities that cannot and should not be replaced by video. She is one among a new wave of artists who are actively keeping the analog technologies alive. Her film work can be associated with Expanded Cinema practice as she manipulates and expands cinema’s structural elements in regards to space, time, frame, projectors and screens in live performances and loop installations. She often manipulates, prepares, alters and tunes the mechanical parts of her film projectors by hand and plays them similarly to the way musicians play their instruments. She has collaborated with a number of musicians and has presented her works at various venues, museums and festivals around the world. Her work is represented by Miguel Abreu Gallery in New York, Galeria Marta Cervera in Madrid, Gallery Xippas in Paris and Ab/Anbar Gallery in Tehran.
